depression 1, me zip

Me: I have no idea what it is, but something is bothering me.

My brain: Well, since you suck in so many areas of your life, that's not a surprise.

Me: I've worked damn hard over the last 3 years to work with you, brain. We've been a team. We've begun to be more optimistic and move on from depression. We're identifying areas of our life, moving on from the victimization thing and identifying where we have power to change things we don't like.

My brain: Yeah? Well then how come you're still in a place where you're struggling? You're 33 and haven't maintained anything you need to survive. You depend on others ALL the time.

Me: I don't know. You must be right...

Karen: E's Brain ... back off. Sometimes it seems as if you're determined to just f- E up. Like the minions inside Herman's Head circa 1991. Fact is E's Brain, it takes a lot of strength and character and frankly, guts to confront modern life. It is a struggle and is rife with contradictory messages (my personal favorite being the American hyper-individualism pitched damn near everywhere at the same time that we are also always called to community). So, E's Brain, I realize that if E were to listen to you and simply shut down, that would pretty much assure your primacy in her life. But we are all more than the workings and rantings of our minds. And E is no exception. So, E's Brain ... back the F- off. And let the lady live, learn, and explore. E makes a difference in a lot of people's lives, which is nothing to shake a stick at. It's pretty frickin' awesome IMHO.

So there. :-PPPP
